The Jungfrau-Aletsch region has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. 23 kilometres of ice stretch here from the Jungfrau down into the Valais, making the Aletsch Glacier one of the most spectacular natural wonders in the Alpine region. But on this hiking tour, the focus is not only on the eternal ice. You will hike over suspension bridges, visit the Aletsch forest, which is a protected nature reserve, and spend the night in mountain inns in the middle of the Valais mountains.
Travel by public transport from your starting point in Switzerland to Brig. Overnight stay in Brig.
Brig - Belalp
In the morning you are going to visit the World Nature Forum, the visitor centre for the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Naters. Afterwards, the first hike of the trip to Blatten is on the programme. Finally, the cable car takes you up to Belalp. Overnight stay in Belalp.
Details: approx. 7 kilometres, ↑ 675 m ↓ 20 m, duration: 2.5 h
Belalp - Riederalp
A wide footpath leads from the resort of Belalp to the Aletschbord. Once there, the panorama tempts you to take a first break: the view sweeps to the Great Aletsch Glacier, the largest glacier in the Alps, to the Matterhorn and other three- and four-thousand-metre peaks in the Valais. The next destination is the 124-metre suspension bridge over the Massa Gorge. After the subsequent ascent, past the Grünsee lake and young birch trees, you find yourself in the Aletsch forest. Swiss stone pines and larches dominate the picture here. About one and a half hours later you have climbed Riederfurka. Overnight stay in Riederalp.
Details: approx. 10 kilometres, ↑ 695 m ↓ 850 m, duration: 4 h
Riederalp - Fiescheralp
Unique vantage points follow one another like fireworks: To the north, a magnificent view of the Aletsch Glacier, the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, and to the south, the four-thousand-metre peaks of the Valais. Gentle descent to Lake Märjelen. Woolly grasses and small lakes form contrasts to the rock and ice. The last part of this stage leads through the Tälligrattunnel to Fiescheralp. Overnight stay in Fiescheralp.
Details: approx. 12 kilometres, ↑ 775 m ↓ 355 m, duration: 4 h
Fiescheralp - Bellwald
The route first leads back to Lake Märjelen. It then descends on old alpine paths to the castle, a gneiss rock massif carved by glaciers. The Goms mountains tower in the background. The Fieschergletscher glacier gradually reveals itself. The 160-metre-long Aspi-Titter suspension bridge points the way to the idyllic Goms mountain village of Bellwald.
Details: approx. 10 kilometres, ↑ 435 m ↓ 1,150 m, duration: 4 h
