Staycation no silver bullet for Swiss tourism
Few industries have been hit harder by the coronavirus pandemic than tourism. In Switzerland, the sector is counting on domestic demand to help offset an expected slump in international business this summer. It seems like a sure-fire strategy in a country spoiled for choice when it comes to natural and cultural attractions. But selling the Swiss on Switzerland isn’t so easy, says Michael Maeder, head of the official tour operator.

Reactions were mixed among other tourism officials. Michael Maeder, director general of Switzerland Travel Centre, said the busy Chinese holiday period in Switzerland only really starts in April, so the recent freeze on group tours had not been felt. Chinese groups represent 3-4% of their annual turnover and two groups had already cancelled for this week, he said. “Depending on the length of the ban, it may have an influence on our business, as clients may make other plans when the ban is lifted,” he said.

Switzerland’s largest DMC Switzerland Travel Centre (STC) now has its first Asia base with the opening of an office in Hong Kong.
Launched on November 29, the Hong Kong office has three full-time staff and handles only B2B business. Currently, the DMC has representatives taking care of Asia sales activities in Beijing, Seoul and Bangkok.

Switzerland Travel Centre, the country’s largest tour operator, projects that within the next three years the share of tourists coming from China will increase to 20 percent. In an exclusive interview with CNNMoney Switzerland, CEO Michael Maeder says, “We are getting 10 percent of the share from China this year, but we do expect it to grow.”
