Cycling holidays Rhine route
7 days / 6 nights
The Rhine-Route frames the east of Switzerland in a big bow. You start with a proper climb across the Oberalp pass, the region of the Rhines source, continue through the romanisch-speaking Surselva, and get impressive views of the wild rhine-valley Ruinaulta and visit the rätoromanian capital Chur. With the typical local wind at your side you ride through the “Bündner Herrschaft” (famous wine region) and on the Rhine dam quickly to the wide Lake of Constance, where orchards, castles and happy tourist chatter decorate the shore of the green and silver shimmering «Swabian Sea».
Highlights

Your travel itinerary
Day 1
Arrival to Andermatt
Arrival by public transport from your starting point in Switzerland to Andermatt. Overnight stay in Andermatt.
Day 2
Andermatt - Disentis
The clear source of the Rhine rises at Lake Toma, not far from the Oberalp Pass, the biggest "obstacle" on the Rhine route. In Val Tujetsch lies one of the richest and most interesting mineral deposits in the Alps and also the monastery village of Disentis.
Details: approx. 30 km ↑ 650 m ↓ 940 m
Day 3
Disentis – Ilanz
"Above the forest" - the Surselva - is the largest Romansh-speaking area in Graubünden. Up and down it goes through pretty hamlets along the gurgling Rhine.
Details: approx. 35 km ↑ 770 m ↓ 325 m
Day 4
Ilanz – Maienfeld / Bad Ragaz
You gaze in amazement at the wild gorge of the Vorderrhein, the Grand Canyon of Switzerland. Chur, the oldest town north of the Alps, has the highest density of restaurants. Linger for a moment before continuing to follow the course of the leisurely flowing river. In the evening, Maienfeld, home of the famous Blauburgunder wine, awaits you.
Details: approx. 55 - 60 km ↑ 655 - 715 m ↓ 825 - 910 m
Day 5
Maienfeld / Bad Ragaz – Buchs
The Bündner Herrschaft, the fertile garden and wine-growing region of Graubünden, lies on slate rubble cones. It is also the home of Heidi, Geissenpeter and the Alpöhi.
Details: approx. 20 - 25 km ↑ 65 - 75 m ↓ 25 - 150 m
Day 6
Buchs – Rorschach
The St. Gallen Rhine Valley is a landscape often spoiled by the warm foehn. Much land was reclaimed during river corrections of the Alpine Rhine in the Rhine Valley. This created the largest freshwater delta in Europe with a rich bird life at the mouth of the Rhine into Lake Constance.
Details: approx. 65 km ↑ 195 m ↓ 240 m
Day 7
Departure
Departure by public transport to your final destination in Switzerland.
Tour Characteristic
The height profile of the Rhine-Route is very steep at the beginning - because the Oberalp Pass and the alpine district of Surselva are followed by the spectacular panoramic stretch through the «Swiss Grand Canyon»: the wildly romantic Rhine Gorge.
Afterwards you ride – in a jaunty up and down – through the wine growing region of the Bündner Herrschaft. From Bad Ragaz however the route generally follows the Rhine.
