The Jungfraujoch Route

Several routes lead to the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe. The fastest option is to take the Eiger Express cable car from Grindelwald. The classic route is via cogwheel railway from Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen up to Kleine Scheidegg. All passengers complete the final ascent to the highest railway station in Europe on the Jungfrau Railway.

Discover the following highlights on your way to the Jungfraujoch:

  • Kleine Scheidegg: an ideal starting point for mountain excursions, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks. The cogwheel railway stops at Kleine Scheidegg for travellers to change to the Jungfrau Railway. 
  • Eiger North Face: during the journey to the Jungfraujoch, the train travels through a tunnel in the North Face of the Eiger and stops for a few minutes at the Eismeer Station viewpoint. 

Attractions on the Jungfraujoch: include the Ice Palace, the Sphinx and Plateau viewing platforms with panoramas of the Aletsch Glacier and surrounding peaks, as well as numerous hiking trails and winter sports opportunities.

How long does the journey to the Jungfraujoch take?

Via the Wengneralp Railway from Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen: The journey from Grindelwald to the Jungfraujoch and back takes 1 hour 26 minutes each way.  To make the most of your day and enjoy time at the Jungfraujoch, allow 5-6 hours total.

By Eiger Express cable car from Grindelwald Terminal: The journey from Grindelwald Terminal to the Jungfraujoch is 45 minutes each-way.  Allow 3.5 to 4.5 hours for the full excursion, including sufficient time on the Jungfraujoch. 

The two routes can be combined to make a round-trip. If you plan to do this, we suggest taking the Wengneralp train up and the Eiger Express cable car down.

Do I need to book a seat in advance and if so, how can I do this?

The Jungfraujoch is one of the most popular destinations in Europe. Individual passengers and small groups can reserve seats from Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch and return.

Without an advance reservation, there is no guarantee of a seat on your preferred departure. Longer waiting times should be expected during peak periods.

When is the best time to visit the Jungfraujoch?

The best time to visit the Jungfraujoch depends on your personal preferences and the experience that you want to have.  Each season has its own unique appeal:

  • Summer (June to August): Ideal months for hikers and nature lovers. The days are longer and warmer and the alpine flora is in full bloom. However, it is also peak season, which means more visitors and higher prices.
  • Winter (December to February): Winter is the perfect time for snow enthusiasts and winter sport fans to visit. The Jungfraujoch is transformed into a winter wonderland with snow activities on offer but the days are shorter and colder.
  • Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November): The weather can be unpredictable, with possible snowfall in spring or early wintry spells in autumn.

Be sure to check the weather in advance and dress accordingly, whatever the season.

Is the Jungfraujoch accessible for those with reduced mobility?

Yes, most trains to the Jungfraujoch are wheelchair accessible. Advanced bookings are recommended. Please indicate your particular needs at the time of booking so that the appropriate arrangements can be made. 

The main attractions at the Jungfraujoch, such as the Ice Palace and viewing platforms are largely barrier-free and there are lifts and ramps to facilitate access.
