What do I have to bear in mind when picking up a hire car and is there a minimum age?

The minimum age for most vehicle categories is 21 years, for higher vehicle categories 25 years. In addition, driving experience of at least three years is required. For young drivers under the age of 25, there is often a surcharge . A credit card in the name of the main driver must be presented when picking up the hire car. A valid driving licence is also required. Additional drivers can be registered on pickup for a surcharge .

Do I have to pay motorway tolls in Switzerland?

Yes, a motorway vignette is required when using your own vehicle. As mentioned above, you can purchase this as an E-vignette online . For certain tunnels or car trains there may be additional fees that are not covered by the vignette and must be paid separately. It is best to familiarise yourself with the most important traffic rules , such as speed limits, in advance to avoid fines.

How do I check I am following the route correctly?

We recommend using Google Maps or other online map services . Instead of just driving on the motorways, you should also choose the picturesque cantonal roads to enjoy the breathtaking landscape and Alpine views more closely, while driving at a lower speed.

How far in advance should I book?

Day 1

Arrival in Davos

Itinerary

Travel to Davos. The holiday resort lies at 1,560 metres above sea level and is a high-altitude health resort with a long tradition.

Day 2

Round trip from Davos and excursion to Diavolezza

Itinerary

Enjoy a drive through picturesque Graubünden. From Davos over the Flüela Pass to Zernez, continue to Diavolezza for an alpine excursion, then return to Davos.

Journey from Davos to Andermatt

Continue over the San Bernadino Pass into Ticino and to Andermatt. On the way you will see the Landwasser Viaduct and the Viamala Gorge.

Journey from Andermatt to Brig
