The Swiss Train Passes

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to get around Switzerland?

Travelling by train is the best way to visit Switzerland as it is one of the fastest and most reliable means of transportation. The Swiss railway network is among the most developed in the world. If you're staying for a while and intend to fit a lot of places into your itinerary, you might want to consider getting a Swiss Travel Pass/Flex or Swiss Half Fare Card.

What is the difference between the Swiss Travel Pass/Flex and the Swiss Half Fare Card?

If you are staying in Switzerland for more than two days, we recommend that you obtain a Swiss Travel Pass. This gives you comfortable travel at a low cost, and you only need to buy one ticket. The Swiss Travel Pass is suitable for travellers who want to use public transport to visit several places during their journey through Switzerland.

If you are planning on staying for a few days at several different places and do not want to travel every day, the Swiss Travel Pass Flex is an attractive option. This will allow you to travel on 3, 4, 6, 8, or 15 freely selected days within one month.

The Swiss Half Fare Card is suitable for guests planning shorter trips and excursions in Switzerland. It is valid for one month and offers unlimited tickets at 50% reduction.

If you are still undecided, we recommend that you purchase your pass at one of the Swiss train stations and seek further advice from the SBB staff.

What option is there for families?

With the Swiss Family Card, children aged 6 - 15 years inclusive travel free of charge throughout Switzerland by public transport including mountain excursions provided a parent has a valid Swiss Travel System pass. The Swiss Family Card is free but must be requested at the time of purchase when ordering the adult pass. Each child is issued with their own Swiss Family Card.

Children under 6 years travel with their parent for free and do not require the Swiss Family Card.

Is there currently a promotion?

No, there are no special offers at the moment for the Swiss Travel Pass/Swiss Half Fare Card. If you sign up for our newsletter, we will keep you informed about our current offers.

Can my ticket be cancelled?

We strongly recommend taking the Flex Cancellation Option for CHF 12 which is automatically added to the booking. In the unfortunate event you need to cancel your pass e.g. flight cancelled, illness etc. you can do so without any cancellation charges as long as you cancel no later than 1 day before the start date of your pass.

If you do not want to take the Flex Cancellation Option, you can ’opt out’. However please note that in the event of cancelling your pass before travel, the following cancellation charges will be applied:

  • CHF 60.-/ booking for cancellations from date of purchase up to 4 days before first day of validity
  • CHF 60.-/ booking + 30% charge of total price for cancellations between 3 – 1 day(s) before first day of validity. No refund thereafter.
